Why Local Flowers?

There’s a good chance that you don’t know where the grocery store bouquets you buy come from. And why should you? Many of them are unmarked, and they’re often the last item you add to your cart due to their proximity to the cash register.

As a flower grower who oversees flowers from seed to harvest, I know that flowers are at their best when grown responsibly, picked seasonally, and enjoyed as soon as possible to the time of harvest. Here are my top reasons why you should consider locally-grown flowers:

No Pesticides

Did you know that 80% of flowers sold in the US are imported from other countries? This means that, to survive the arduous journey of air travel, rigorous customs checks, and bumpy truck rides, they must be loaded with chemicals to prevent disease and decay during transit.

Since locally grown flowers require minimal travel, they can be grown pesticide-free.

Better Quality and Selection

Can you recall taking a first bite out of an apple picked off the tree in autumn? Or how about a farmers’ market tomato in summer? It is well established that fruits and vegetables picked at their seasonal peak are superior. The same is true for flowers.

Many of the most delightful flowers such as cosmos, dahlias, and snapdragons never make it to market because they are not cut out for travel. However, these flowers are readily available through local growers all summer long.

Support Local Pollinators

According to the USDA, pollinators are responsible for 1 out of every 3 bites of food you consume. Yet pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds are struggling to survive due to a lack of adequate pollen and nectar.

Supporting local flower farmers is a great way to ensure more pollinator-friendly plants are being planted in your area. Not only will you have access to beautiful flowers, but you will also support pollinators which will then fortify the food chain. It’s a win-win!

I hope these tips have demonstrated the value of locally grown flowers. I strongly believe that flowers picked in season will give you the freshest, longest-lasting, and most colorful bouquet for your table.
